About Association

Professor G.S. Gosal (late) planted the seed of this association. A doctorate from the University of Madison, Wisconsin, United States, under the supervision of Professor Glenn. T. Trewartha, his love and work remained Population Geography. Distinguished by rare qualities of intellectual brilliance, mission-directedness and sagacity of mind, he steered for years this association to its present eminence. It was under his stewardship that the Department of Geography, Panjab University, became a reputed centre of teaching and research on Population Geography.

Publication of a journal,Population Geography, is its regular activity, among others.
What we do

Promote Population Geography

The main objective of the Association is to promote Population Geography as an area of specialization through both teaching and research. Since its inception, the Association has been regularly publishing the journal, Population Geography. It is being brought out primarily with a view to developing a general frame of reference for those who are interested in studying population patterns and processes in spatial perspective.

Journal

The idea to bring out a journal on this theme was, however, not indigenous. It was Dr. Manjit Singh Sidhu, a post-graduate student of the department from Malaysia, who provided seed money to launch the journal. Enamoured by Professor Gosal’s commitment to the discipline and admiring the eminence of the department in population studies, he was enthused to make a donation of Rs. 10,000/- for starting the publication of the journal. Strange and unique is the truth that whereas in most cases a society or association feels the collective need for a journal, in the case of Population Geography it was the creation of the journal that called for formation of the Association of Population Geographers of India.

Lectures

The Association celebrates April 1 as Founder’s Day of the Association. A Memorial Lecture in honour of Professor G.S. Gosal in regularly organised on this date. It coincides with his birth day.
