Association of Population Geographers of India (APGI)

It is a Community of geographers with a keen interest in population geography. Established in 1978, the Association is headquartered at the Department of Geography, Panjab University, Chandigarh is a non-profit organization. The Association has the following objectives:

(i) to promote research in Population Geography and related fields;
(ii) to publish a journal entitled Population Geography;
(iii) to collect literature on Population Geography and related aspects for building a sound library of the AGPI;
(iv) to establish contacts with other similar geographical organizations in India and abroad through mutual exchange of geographical literature;
(v) to manage funds and endowments by way of subscriptions, donations, grants from governmental and non-governmental agencies, in addition to the sale proceeds of the journal; and
(vi) undertake such other activities necessary for the promotion of the Association.

For the furtherance of geographic knowledge in general and population geography, the Association celebrates its foundation day on April 1 every year. On the day coinciding with the birthday of the Association’s founder President, late Professor G.S.Gosal, eminent scholars are invited to deliver a lecture to the General Body members on an emerging research theme relating to Population Geography.

Our Mission

The Association of Population Geographers of India, a professional body of Indian Geographers with the journal Population Geography commits to advance population studies from a spatial perspective and support population geographers throughout the globe for the benefit of all people. To fulfil this mission, the APGI Executive Council has set the following broad goals:  

  • Enhance communication among population scientists;
  • Promote and defend the integrity of population geography and its use;
  • Strengthen support for the population geography;
  • Provide a voice for population geography on societal issues;
  • Promote the responsible use of population studies from a spatial perspective in public policy;
  • Strengthen and diversify the teaching and research in population geography;
  • Foster geographic analysis of various aspects of the population for all individuals;
  • Increase public engagement with population studies; and
  • Advance international cooperation in population sciences.
